Cedar Fever Season Brings Increased Allergy and Asthma Concerns Across Oklahoma

Cedar fever season has arrived in Oklahoma, prompting health experts to warn residents about increased allergy and asthma risks linked to high cedar pollen levels.
Medical professionals with the Oklahoma Allergy & Asthma Clinic report that cedar pollen exposure can significantly worsen asthma symptoms, including wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Individuals with asthma may require closer symptom monitoring during peak pollen periods and are advised to follow their prescribed asthma management plans.
Windy weather can further intensify exposure by spreading pollen over long distances, affecting people even in areas without nearby cedar trees. Experts recommend reducing outdoor activity during windy conditions and changing clothing after spending time outdoors to limit pollen contact.
Health officials also caution that cedar fever symptoms often mimic those of common colds or flu, as allergy season overlaps with respiratory illness season. Unlike infections, allergy symptoms typically persist beyond a few days. Residents experiencing prolonged symptoms are encouraged to consult a healthcare provider to determine the cause.
Although cedar fever cannot be completely prevented, doctors say symptoms can often be controlled through exposure reduction and medical care when necessary.
