FAIRVIEW, Okla. — Two people have been confirmed dead following a powerful tornado that struck the Fairview area late Thursday night, March 5, 2026. Emergency officials say the large and destructive tornado moved through portions of Major County, leaving behind significant damage and heartbreak for the local community.

First responders and emergency crews worked through the night searching damaged homes and debris after the tornado tore through the area. Authorities confirmed Friday morning that two lives were lost as a result of the storm. Additional damage assessments are ongoing, and officials are still evaluating the full extent of the destruction left behind.

The storm system that moved across Oklahoma Thursday night produced severe weather across several parts of the state. Meteorologists had warned that conditions were favorable for strong to severe storms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.

For many residents in Fairview and surrounding communities, the storm struck during the overnight hours when severe weather can be especially dangerous. Tornadoes that occur at night are often more difficult to see and can catch people off guard if they are not closely monitoring weather alerts.

Officials continue to urge residents across Oklahoma to remain weather aware as the severe weather season begins to ramp up across the region. Having multiple ways to receive weather warnings—such as NOAA weather radios, smartphone alerts, and local news coverage—can save lives.

Safety experts stress the importance of having a tornado safety plan in place before storms arrive. Residents should know the safest place in their home to take shelter, typically a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor away from windows. Mobile homes and vehicles are extremely dangerous during tornadoes, and those in vulnerable structures should identify nearby shelters in advance.

Emergency managers also recommend preparing an emergency kit that includes flashlights, batteries, water, and essential medications in case power outages or storm damage occur.

As the Fairview community begins the difficult process of recovery, many across Oklahoma are mourning alongside them.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives and with the entire Fairview community during this incredibly difficult time.

The Oklahoma News & Weather Network will continue monitoring storm damage reports and provide updates as more information becomes available. Residents are encouraged to remain alert for changing weather conditions and always take tornado warnings seriously.
