WOODWARD, Okla. — A felony animal cruelty case out of Woodward is drawing intense outrage after authorities say a dog was starved to death in what residents are calling one of the worst neglect cases the area has seen in recent years.

Lauren Wright, of Woodward, has been charged with one felony count of cruelty to animals following the death of a severely emaciated dog that weighed just 32 pounds — despite officials stating the breed should have weighed between 80 and 100 pounds when healthy.

According to the necropsy findings, the dog’s stomach contained no food at the time of death. Instead, investigators noted the presence of debris consistent with the animal attempting to consume leaves and sticks — a desperate attempt to survive.

The report further detailed:

  • An enlarged gallbladder

  • Severe muscle wasting and advanced malnutrition

  • The body was in serious shock prior to death

  • The dog was unable to stand, walk, or move independently

Officials say the condition of the animal indicated prolonged starvation.

Found in a Ditch

What has intensified the public’s reaction is the fact that the dog was reportedly located in a roadside ditch.

Based on the extreme level of weakness described in the necropsy — including the animal’s inability to stand or walk — many in the community are questioning how the dog came to be in that location. Authorities have not publicly detailed how the animal ended up there, and that portion of the investigation remains unclear.

Residents say the location raises disturbing questions about the circumstances surrounding the dog’s final moments.

$10,000 Bond Sparks Outrage

Wright was arrested, charged, and given a $10,000 bond, which she has since posted.

Community members have expressed frustration, questioning how basic care could allegedly not be provided to an animal in such severe condition. Some are now calling for the maximum penalties under Oklahoma law if a conviction occurs.

Legal Reminder

These are charges. Lauren Wright is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The case remains under investigation.
